Reverend Dr. Reynolds Trippett (1822 - 1909). Methodist Episcopal Minster, Civil War Rebel.

Reynolds Trippett was born in Doncaster, Yorkshire on 18th April 1822, the third child of Thomas Trippitt (1780-1857) and Mary Ann Rhodes (1792-1866.)  He was christened at the Anglican Church of St George on 2nd June 1822 with his brother Charles (1819-1895.)

The Census taken on 6th June 1841 recorded the family at Bennithorpe, which is now part of Doncaster.  Present were Thomas Trippitt, aged 60, an Agricultural labourer; Mary aged 49; Reynolds, aged 19, Tailors Apprentice; Eliza, aged 15; and William, aged 14 who was a Whitesmith apprentice. 
2 other sons were recorded elsewhere as male servants.  Samuel (1817-1878) was employed by Francis Maude, aged 40, a clergyman at Hoyland, Yorkshire. Charles was one of three servants in the household of William Watson, a 40 year old farmer at Intask Farm, Doncaster.

On 6th December 1843 Reynolds arrived at New Orleans in Louisiana in the United States of America on the ship "Champion." The shipping list records his age as 22 with "Tailor" as his occupation.

By 2nd September 1844 he had returned to Doncaster and married Susanna Crowther at the independent Chapel at Hall Gate.  Susanna was the daughter of Mr W. L. Crowther, a nurseryman.

The newlyweds soon departed for New Orleans on the ship "Norfolk", arriving there on 11th November 1844.  The shipping list records their details as Reynolds Trippett, 23, tailor and Susannah Trippett, also 23.

Reynolds and Susannah had two daughters -
Fannie Louisa Fowler Trippett was born in Doncaster on 20th March 1849 and baptised on 1st January 1850 in the Anglican parish of Christ Church.
Sarah Amelia Fowler Trippett was born in Lousiana, USA on 3rd September 1853.

                                Clergyman.He was one of 14 cabin passengers, with 319 in steerage.

                                   Sarah A, daughter, aged 41. Living on own means, born United States (American subject)

26 February 1909      Reynolds S Trippett, aged 86, of 51 Spring Gardens, Doncaster died of Cardiac Failure    
                                   and Bronchitis.  Buried at Balby, Yorkshire.
24 June 1909             Sarah A F Trippett, aged 52, of 51 Spring Gardens, died of Cerebral Softening and Exhaustion.

31 July 1912               Fanny F L Faulk, died aged 61. She was a widow, of 51 Spring Gardens, Doncaster.


This rather stark timeline from records found provides snapshots of a life of service in the build-up to the American Civil War, and in its aftermath. Family were separated at times although travel between the continents appears to have been quite regular.     

Appointments were made regularly as it seems that limited periods were allowed in a parish before a re-allocation was made at the annual conferences.

Obituaries provide a more vivid details of the character of Rev. Dr. Reynolds Trippett, his work undertaken over 44 years spent in US States and continued service during his 21 years in retirement.
